Literacy Assistant, LINC 

(Full time, Contract until March 31, 2026)

Catholic Crosscultural Services (CCS) is a settlement agency providing a wide range of services to immigrants and refugees regardless of race, religion or status.

We are searching for a full-time Literacy Assistant to work with the LINC instructors to support Literacy, low-level students and those with in the LINC.

What you will be doing:

  • Provide one-on-one and small group (2-3 students) support to students that are referred by LINC instructors in levels Literacy – CLB 1 to learn the English alphabet, improve writing, penmanship, reading and pronunciation skills
  • Provide one-on-one and small group digital literacy support to newcomer students in levels Literacy to CLB 2 to support them to use the basic technology tools for class participation (email, online meeting technology such as Zoom, file creation and saving, using Avenue.ca etc.) more quickly
  • Provide language training and support to individual students with developmental and learning disabilities
  • Help instructor in creating a conducive learning environment in the classroom by working with students that need extra support
  • Preparing learning materials for students who require extra support
  • In consultation with the instructor, design lessons plan for students with special needs
  • Participate in professional development sessions and actively utilize information to enhance personal teaching skills
  • Participate in agency events and staff meetings
  • Provide back up support as needed
  • Miscellaneous duties as required

What are we looking for?

  • Related University degree or College Diploma related to teaching and (TESL membership an asset)
  • 3 years’ experience teaching English as a Second Language
  • Experience working with literacy students would be an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively analyze, synthesize and disseminate pedagogical information
  • Strong interpersonal skills and awareness of newcomer issues
  • Working knowledge of Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA)
  • Ability to work as a team with LINC Instructors and Lead Instructor
  • Proven computer skills (MS Word, Email, and Internet)

Location: Scarborough, ON

Compensation:  $26.52 to $29.52 based on experience

Hours of work35 hours per week, including evenings, weekends and occasional overtime as required
